About us
Small practice. Serious craft.
BrainBrio is a boutique tutoring practice in La Jolla, serving families across San Diego since 2018.
Our story
Founded by a teacher who watched bright children get lost
BrainBrio grew out of Elisabeth's 20-plus years of teaching. The pattern was always the same: bright, capable children slipping quietly through the cracks — not because they couldn't learn, but because no one had the time to teach them the way they learned.
So we built the opposite of a big-box tutoring center: a small practice where each tutor works with a handful of families, and each session is planned for one specific child.
And we built it to last. Our tutors aren't gig workers passing through. We grow slowly, on purpose, so your family keeps the same tutor from the first session to the last report card.

Meet the founder
Elisabeth Mikolchak
Founder and lead tutor, BrainBrio
Elisabeth has taught since 2004: first as a Montessori classroom assistant, then as a private tutor in Minnesota, Texas and California for students from kindergarten through university, and as an assistant teacher in K-6 classrooms at Albert Einstein Academy in San Diego.
Most of that teaching has happened at kitchen tables. For seven years she tutored three siblings through a rigorous private high school, from basic math and Spanish to honors English, pre-calculus, AP chemistry, AP history and AP psychology, including students with ADHD. She has coached high-schoolers through entrance exams and application deadlines, and she has spent years inside family homes, which is why BrainBrio teaches in yours, or online, rather than asking families to come to us.
She holds a BA in Spanish with minors in Biology and German from St. Cloud State University, and teaches in English, Spanish, Russian, and German. Her lessons are Montessori-informed: hands first, then pictures, then symbols.
- BA in Spanish, minors in Biology and German
- CBEST and CSET passed
- Montessori classroom experience
- CPR and First Aid certified
Teaches in English, Spanish, Russian, and German.
What we believe
Three commitments
One-to-one, always.
No groups, no rotating staff. One tutor who knows your child's history, humor, and hurdles.
Method over worksheets
Montessori-informed, multisensory, and a Learning Profile first. Craft you can see at the table, not packets.
Joy is a strategy
Children learn what they don't dread. Building genuine confidence is instructional design, not decoration.
How we hire
Choosing your tutor is the most important thing we do
Our tutors aren't profiles in a directory. Here's the bar every one of them clears before meeting your child.
- Every BrainBrio tutor must:
- A degree in their subject. From a rigorous university — paired with the rarer skill of explaining it clearly to a nine-year-old.
- Three-plus years at the table. Real classroom or one-to-one teaching experience. We never staff first-timers with your child.
- Method training. Montessori, structured-literacy, or multisensory backgrounds — a teaching craft, not just subject knowledge.
- References from real families. Strong personal references from parents and schools they've actually worked with.
- Background check & interview. Every tutor is background-checked, insured, and interviewed in person — including a live teaching demo.
Matched by a person, not a profile.
You won't scroll a directory of strangers. Our director interviews every family and knows our tutors personally — their strengths, their humor, the kind of child they light up with — and makes the match with insight no online profile or resume can offer. If the chemistry isn't right, we make it right at no cost.
A high bar for every tutor
Every tutor who joins us teaches a live demo lesson before we decide, and arrives with years of real teaching already behind them — because the difference between tutoring that works and tutoring that fills an hour is always the teacher.
Continuity by design
Your child keeps the same tutor from the first session on, from fractions through finals, and never starts over with a stranger. We grow the team only as fast as we can keep that promise.
The first-session guarantee
If the first session isn't a fit, you don't pay for it — we refund it entirely, no forms and no hard feelings, and talk through what a better fit would look like. We can offer that because it almost never happens.
